As a first year graduate student in East Asian studies, I chose to study Japanese because I am broadly concerned with the development of literary and visual culture in East Asia in the 20th century. In the context of Japan, I am specifically interested in post-WWII trauma and memory. I hope that my knowledge of the Japanese language can help me with gathering primary sources in the near future :)
